Any contraindications for acupuncture?

- Drug or alcohol intoxication, medical and surgical emergency (i.e. blood pressure above 180/120) or metal allergy (surgical stainless steel needles are used)

What should I do to prepare for a treatment?

-Please arrive 15 minutes early to first treatment to complete new patient paperwork. Be sure to eat a light meal before treatment, and do not arrive under the influence of drugs or alcohol

How long does a treatment take?

- Initial treatments take 1.5 hours, the practitioner will ask details about your chief complaint and health history. The remaining 30 minutes is for you to relax with the needles inserted.

- Follow up treatments take one hour. That includes the time with the needles inserted. Should you be late for your appointment, your total treatment time may be reduced.

What should I expect after treatment?

- Effects from acupuncture treatment will typically be strongest the day of treatment or the day after. Slight bruising from acupuncture needle insertion is possible, however it is very uncommon. Some tingling, distention, or slight electric sensation that travels down the meridian can be felt during treatment. Acupuncture is a mild therapy meant to gently bring the body back to alignment, therefore adverse effects are usually mild and do not last long. After acupuncture, it is common to feel relaxed and a renewed sense of wellbeing; because of this relaxing effect some people may even fall asleep during treatment.

When should I schedule my next treatment?

- The number of treatments needed varies depending on severity, duration, and the nature of the complaint. Acupuncture treatments have a cumulative effect. Just like riding a bike, it takes time to build the momentum needed to cruise along. For the first few weeks of treatment, it is recommended to come in once to twice a week. Depending on how symptoms improve, you can reduce the frequency to one a week or every other week. Once symptoms have resolved, it is recommended to be treated once a month for maintenance and prevention of future ailments
